A Look Back at the Best Fall Winter 2014-2015 Paris Haute Couture Fashions

Whether they came to plan for Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Monday’s Emmy Awards or any other high-style occasions soon-to-come, celebrities packed the front rows at last month’s fall winter 2014-2015 haute couture collections in Paris.

Given that these fashions are considered the world’s most glamorous, even the stars who didn’t venture to France may yet turn up in these luxurious frocks. After all, it’s a good bet that their stylists have spent the summer examining the extravagant inventory.

Just take a look at the standout fashions on this page and in the photo gallery below.

Perhaps you can predict the fun frocks and elegant gowns that celebrities will wear to Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards and Monday’s Emmys.

Stories from the haute couture …

By clicking on the various links on this page, you’ll find my Los Angeles Times stories, which I wrote from Paris during the fall winter 2014-2015 haute couture shows. I’ve also included links to the Los Angeles Times photo galleries for the top individual designers and for a comprehensive “red carpet” photo gallery.

The fall winter 2014 2015 Paris haute couture fashions at this website come from Atelier Versace, Giorgio Armani Privé, Atelier Versace, Chanel, Elie Saab, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexandre Vauthier, Loris Azzaro, Vionnet, On Aura Tout Vu, Ulyana Sergeenko, Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, and Zuhair Murad. You’ll also find photos of jewelry from Bulgari, Louis Vuitton, Wilfredo Rosado and Venyx by Eugenie Niarchos.

So many celebrities checked out the fashions…

At Atelier Versace at the start of haute couture week, Jennifer Lopez glided to her gilded chair in a gown from the collection and within seconds, Donatella Versace kicked off the season with her fashion presentation.

Always a leader in the celebrity department, Giogio Armani Privé seated Pink, Kate Hudson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Juliette Binoche, Jared Leto and Sophia Loren beside Roberta Armani.

Kristen Stewart arrived early enough to the Chanel show to be deluged by inquiries about her new hairdo, cut that very morning. The red color, she explained as a remnant of her just-finished film, “American Ultra.”

Her interest in fashion apparent, Stewart said this was her third Chanel show, the others having been last fall’s Paris haute couture show set amid ancient ruins, and this year’s resort collection, presented drive-in movie-style in Dallas.

Others enjoying Chanel’s presentation of high fashions – most often paired with flat thong sandals – were actors Jared Leto, Nina Dobrev, Isabelle Huppert, Lily Collins, Dakota Johnson, Alma Jodorowsky and models Alice Dellal and Poppy Delevingne.

Modeling on the Chanel runway, Kendall Jenner wore a wild and wooly strapless gown with fringes; and a pregnant Ashleigh Good came out as the bride.

Considering that Karl Lagerfeld also paired last season’s collection with comfy shoes, in that case sneakers, it will be interesting to see if anyone turns up on the red carpet minus heels.  (As a side note, Cate Blanchett collected her Crystal Award at June’s Women In Film Crystal + Lucy Awards in flat sandals.)

In between shows, Emma Watson sat at the table beside me for a casual lunch at the Bristol Hotel’s lobby bar. Later in the afternoon, we spotted Sean Penn and Charlize Theron from across the bar at the same hotel.

More famous faces seen in Paris for the shows were Jennifer Lawrence, Rosamund Pike, Kim Kardashian, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, Marion Cotillard, Olivia Palermo, Alexander Ludwig, Luke Evans, Elsa Pataky, Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, model Lily McMenamy, the artist Francesco Vezzoli, costume designer/ filmmaker Catherine Martin and director Baz Luhrmann,

Paris, when it drizzles…

For those who turned up in Paris, it proved to be a wet week.

Light showers fell on Paris most days during the fall winter 2014-2015 collections. On one afternoon, there was enough rain to drench clothes and soak the shoes of anyone caught in the downpour, as I was.

En route to the Cinema Elyseés Biarritz, where Stephane Rolland showed a film of his new collection, I ran through one too many puddles and my waterlogged shoes broke.

So I dashed into the nearest shop – The Gap – and grabbed a pair of sandals from the display beside the cash register. Not exactly haute couture, but at least I arrived to the show on time.

The week’s finale…

While the Emmys and VMAs may be the big nights in Los Angeles, the black-tie end-of-the-week shindig served as the grand finale for the haute couture presentations in Paris.

Hosted by the French fashion association, a.k.a. the Fédération Française de la Couture du Prêt à Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode, outgoing president Didier Grumbach welcomed designers.

They included Alexis Mabille, Raf Simons of Christian Dior, Marco Zanini of Valentino, Christian Louboutin, Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad, Bouchra Jarrar, Alexandre Vauthier, Anne-Valerie Hash, Julien Fournie, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Yassen Samouilov and Livia Stoianova of On Aura Tout Vu and many others.

Models turned up too and couldn’t have been easier to spot. There beside a buffet, standout model Anna Cleveland said she’s been modeling since age 12 but this week marked her haute couture debut. The statuesque 24-year old said she’s a second-generation model, the daughter of Pat Cleveland.

Getting there, but not so fast, thanks to a “climbing poet”

As for me, I’ll be fortunate enough to see the fashions ultimately chosen for the Emmys – up close – at Monday’s awards ceremony and Governors Ball in Los Angeles. Before leaving this page, however, I thought I’d mention one eventful detour on this past summer’s trip to Paris.

On aura tout vu-juillet 2014-112

Given today’s time-consuming airport security checks, I haven’t heard the old cliché “getting there is half the fun” in quite some time. Yet despite the ever-increasing annoyances and security checks, an un-ticketed passenger managed to board our flight from Paris to Rome.

Calling himself the “poete escaladeur” – in English the climbing poet – the culprit sat in one of the usually-empty center seats in a three-across side of Air France business class, looking like an ordinary passenger in his dark business suit. Apparently making a habit habit of defying security, he insisted – after having been discovered – on waiting for the police to come for him, which all the other passengers of course had to do, too.

So we waited for the police, he disembarked and we began taxiing to the runway, that is until the pilots brought us back to the gate to disembark with our carry-on luggage until the authorities checked the plane and determined it was safe for us to take off.
